On the rainy morning of January 18, I arrived at Valley Vista to find 30 volunteers. They were primarily employees, including friends and family members, from Kaiser Permanente facilities in Santa Rosa, San Rafael & Petaluma.

Those who have followed my past efforts on this site know that I used to be able to spot a tag a mile away or to identify an abaondoned shopping cart within 50 yards. Readers also know that I evolved from such urban topics to covering the positive community aspects of low water landscaping and community gardens.

Final Assault on City Hall…Turf
By the end of the day, they had shoveled, hauled, and raked–250 yards of mulch, 50 yards of compost, and 20 yards of topsoil. For good measure, they also built several raised beds, pulled out several bushes and scrubs, and planted several native plants.

Petaluma City Hall Turf Attacked!
October 12 was the beginning of the transformation of much of the turf area around Petaluma’s City Hall. In the early morning, advance strike teams from the Petaluma Mulchers Army (PMA) landed on the grounds, unloaded equipment and began preparing the terrain for the main attack on October 24.
